Overview

This conceptual photo essay explores how improper recycling practices and material waste directly impact human health and physical existence. Placing the artist (myself) at the center of the narrative through a series of self-portraits, the project visualizes a dystopian trajectory where plastic and cardboard physically merge with the human body, blurring the boundaries between living tissue and discarded refuse. The work is deeply rooted in the daily reality of graphic design; a discipline that frequently generates significant waste through trial-and-error printing, excess materials and single use packaging. It highlights the sharp irony of an industry that strives for aesthetic perfection while remaining blind to the environmental footprint left behind in the creative process.

Challenge

The primary challenge of this project was translating the invisible, long-term harm of waste accumulation and microplastics into an immediate, visually arresting medium. It required confronting the graphic design industry’s internal habits without resorting to generic environmental tropes. On a technical level, the project demanded a seamless blend of physical sculpture and bodily applications with digital editing and frame-by-frame movement, ensuring the uncomfortable fusion between skin and debris felt authentic and compelling.

Solution

The solution emerged through a body as canvas approach, using tactile, wearable sculptural elements crafted from studio waste (old newspaper, cardboard, and plastic bag) applied directly to the body to establish an invasive, organic growth. Stop-motion animation was employed to convey the progressive nature of this transformation over time, while high contrast digital editing emphasized the textural overlaps between human skin and industrial waste. Structured as a deliberate sequence, the narrative moves from pristine design spaces to material consumption, forcing the audience to trace the direct path from artistic production to ecological and physical degradation.

Always eager to collaborate, share ideas, and elevate the visual pipeline.
