Developed as a group project for the Multimedia Communications 2 course, this mobile application redefines the tourist experience in Dubrovnik through universal accessibility. Designed as a comprehensive digital guide for all visitors, its primary innovation lies in ensuring that historical landmarks are fully accessible to individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments.
The app combines a visual identity inspired by Dubrovnik’s historic coat of arms with custom illustrations, WCAG approved high contrast colors, an interactive accessible map and personalized travel planning.
Challenge & Sollution
Navigating Dubrovnik’s historic infrastructure presents significant physical barriers, including steep inclines, stairs, and uneven cobblestones that create unpredictable travel conditions for users with mobility challenges or strollers. To resolve this, the application incorporates a specialized interactive map with tailored navigation routes that explicitly highlight accessible paths while clearly marking physical obstacles throughout the city.
Creating a visually distinctive cultural identity without compromising legibility for users with visual impairments posed a second major obstacle. This was overcome by subjecting the coat of arms inspired color palette to rigorous WCAG contrast testing, paired with custom crafted icons and illustrations designed for immediate, intuitive recognition.
Language barriers and the anxiety of navigating an unfamiliar, complex historic environment often create friction for incoming tourists. The application eliminates these obstacles by initiating the user journey with an immediate language selection and structuring the city's rich offerings into intuitive categories covering landmarks, accommodation, gastronomy, activities, and transport. Furthermore, users can save preferred locations to a personalized map ahead of time, ensuring seamless, stress free travel planning prior to arrival.
